i get around

Posted by kyden on Wednesday Apr 14, 2010 Under Uncategorized

i have been practicing crawling for months now.  i usually end up crawling in place, moving maaaybe 2 inches or so (and sometimes in the wrong direction :( )  i just can’t figure out how to coordinate the movement between my hands and knees.  but that’s ok, i’ve found other ways to get around.

rolling: i can roll and roll and roll.  i find that this is the most efficient way to visit the four corners of my crib every night.

crab walk: i can get up on my hands and feet, stick my butt up in the air, and “walk” around a little bit.  i don’t move sideways, but mommy says that i look like a crab.

lunging: i can get on my hands and knees, rock back and forth to build momentum, then lunge forward.  i especially like doing this in front of the mirror.  and if you’re wondering…  yes, i do crash my forehead into the mirror.  repeatedly.

rotating: i can rotate around and around like the hands on a clock.

army crawl: i can get around pretty well, dragging myself on my elbows with my belly on the ground.  i learned this trick from koda’s sister, kiara.  she is the best army crawler around.  staying low to the ground, we can sneak around, undetected.  this is also good practice for adventure racing.  logan doesn’t know it yet, but he’s going to be my racing partner.

cruising: i can hold onto chest-high objects (coffee table, ottoman, exersaucer) and cruise around.  in fact, i don’t like to sit in my exersaucer anymore — i just stand and “walk” around the outside of it.  and rather than sit in people’s laps, i roll onto my tummy and slide down to the ground so that i can cruise along the couch.  i usually end up falling to the floor after just a few steps, but sometimes koda is there to break my fall.  how nice of him, huh?

so yeah, yeah, i can’t crawl.  it’s mommy’s fault.  gung-gung says she never crawled.  but i’m tired of being on the ground anyway.   so today, i pulled myself up from the ground and stood up — ALL BY MYSELF!  i think i’ll skip crawling and go straight to walking, just like mommy did.

i hope daddy doesn’t lower my crib mattress.  i’m gonna try to vault myself out of my crib tonight.

Awesome! You’ll have to teach me how to do that (along with spit). I can’t wait to adventure race! I’ve heard stories and it sounds fun!

  2. uncle hank Says:

to help with the army crawl, have mommy lead you with your favorite veggie. that worked with kiara. she doesn’t like veggies, so i used doggie treats.

AUNTIE IS SOOO PROUD OF YOU KY!!!!! You are growing up so fast! If you learn to crawl out of your crib, maybe you can sneak out of the house and visit me :) I love your pics you posted. You look way cooler standing next to your excersaucer than trapped in it! :) I also love that you have mastered the plank pose…you and I are going to be great Yoga buddies!!!!

Having struggled sustaining the plank position in pilates yesterday, I was so impressed to see you demonstrate how I SHOULD have looked! I should print out that photo and stick it up in plain sight on pilates wednesdays to inspire the rest of our crew. (Pilates is done on the floor of my courtroom at lunchtime so I control decor. ;) )

So mommy and daddy are babyproofing the bottom 2 feet of their house now, huh? You’re doing so great training them!

@logan: hurray! adventure racing does sound like a lot of fun. uncle mike says to make sure to pack a box of fried chicken in the transition area.
@uncle hank: i’m already an army crawling expert. but thanks for the tips. i’ll use yams to teach logan. yams are yummy!
@auntie b: i know all kinds of cool poses — the toe suck, the bunny hop, the shoulder spin, etc. i am working on coming to visit you. with all the airplane rides that mommy gives me, i am getting good at flying!
@auntie cindy: i had no idea that women would get so excited about that full-body action shot! if i had known, i wouldn’t spend so much time smiling and looking cute for the camera. it would be so cool to have my photo hung like a pin-up model. oh wait a minute… having my photo posted in a courtroom might NOT be something that i want to brag about.

Thanks Ky for the 411 on all the different ways of getting around. I’ve mastered the rolling and rotating, but that cruising thing sounds awesome. Can’t wait till I get there….

matthew, i had to skip to pulling myself up and cruising around because i just can’t crawl. it’s pretty awesome, but frightening for mommies and daddies. i recommend crawling for a few months to give your parents time to mentally prepare :P
